Basic things you need to understand and then you can immediately play CHESSapeak Challenge® following the Traditional Rules of Chess. (see note below)
First and foremost the "pawn moves" need to be understood. Your partner is opposite you and your 2 opponents are on your left and right. As in Chess, each pawn can move directly forward and capture pieces diagonally forward. On a pawn's initial move it can move 1 square forward OR it can move up to the square that is immediately below the double demarcation lines (for the two pawns on the extreme left and on the extreme right the initial move is only one square).
Now, consider just the right half of your portion of the game board. Later if a Pawn moves inside a square with double demarcation lines or to the right hand side of such a square then the forward direction of the pawn changes 90 degrees to the right and now the pawn is directed towards his opponent on the right and continues to capture opponent pieces on the diagonal. Similar rules apply to the pawns on the left half of the game board . . so that these Pawns can be directed towards the opponent on the left.
Note: New players immediately understand and adopt this "change of direction rule for pawns" . . . no problem . .To Sum Up:
A Pawn's "moves" & "captures" follow Traditional Chess rules, except for
(1) optional 1st move & (2) change in forward direction.Note: Power Pieces move according to Traditional Chess rules. The increased size of the playing surface makes the Knight the weakest piece. So ... the Exception is with the Knight... players can choose to adopt an alternate rule at the start of the game. © January 1993-2005
